Joey Gase on bumper throw: ‘When you’re in the moment, sometimes things happen’
Joey Gase ? Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Joey Gase is sharing his perspective on the infamous bumper-throwing incident from Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Richmond Raceway.

In a moment that went viral for the Xfinity Series, Gase, after tangling with fellow driver Dawson Cram, ripped his busted bumper off and tossed it at Cram’s car. Evidently, Gase believed the incident was avoidable, and Cram was at fault.

After becoming a viral sensation, Gase joined SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Tuesday, where he shared his side of how everything went down between Cram and himself.

“When you’re in the moment, sometimes things happen,” Gase said, explaining that he was seeing red after wrecking. “Hopefully there’s no penalties that come from it.”

While it remains to be seen if Gase is penalized by NASCAR, he certainly earned himself a few more fans for sticking up for himself. Nobody will ever forget when Gase tossed his bumper at an opposing driver, for a myriad of reasons.

As for Cram, the wheelman has a history in the Xfinity Series. He happens to be at the center of a lot of these types of incidents. He pushed a little too hard and sent Joey Gase around and into the outside wall.

It’s easy to see why Gase felt the sting a little more though. He owns his own team, and that makes it a little more personal when he gets wrecked like this. He works hard to get to the track every week and he felt like Cram wronged him. He might not be wrong, either.

“I think him just not having his head screwed on right,” Gase said about Cram after leaving the care center, immediately following the incident. “You know I gave the kid his first opportunity ever in Xfinity and I know [team owner] Johnny Davis is in the business of wrecking race cars and we’re definitely not we’re a small team and racing hard for the lucky dog and apparently he just didn’t know how to lift. Maybe his throttle stuck, I don’t know.”

Moreover, Gase was trying to fight for a top-20 on Saturday. He was fighting for a lucky dog position when he was wrecked. To have it taken like that is going to be a tough pill to swallow for him and his team. This season he is splitting the driving duties in that car. Frankie Muniz is making limited starts in it throughout the year.
